In matters of criminal law, psychologists at MPA have assessed a range of issues including competence to stand trial and the determination of sanity. In addition to our role in the guilt-innocence phase of a trial, we have frequently been involved in the post conviction sentencing phase wherein our assessment focuses on the presence of mitigating/ aggravating factors. In this process, the assessment of pre-existing trauma and its impacts gains relevance as does our expertise in matters such as dissociation and the differentiation of antisocial personality from other personality disorders. The formal assessment of recidivism/risk is also of benefit in this effort.
Our psychologists have been involved in a range of criminal cases including matters of Internet Pornography/Solicitation, Domestic Battery, Criminal Confinement, and Capital Murder.
